Got my first salmon of the season on sunday night. It fell for a size 12 Glenfarclass shrimp fished deep and fast on a sink tip line and a 13 ft rod.

The fish took at dusk just as the colours were starting to go and gave a good account of itself. A fresh fish of 8lb or so it was safely returned to carry on
it's magical journey upriver.

I've put in about 50 hours with the fly rod on the Severn so far, but most of the time the conditons have been far from perfect...

How should I fish it in April-May-June?

1. Dry or wet fly?
2. Suggested patterns? I haven't got the cash at the moment to invest in loads of different types. If I were only to buy a few different types, what
should they be?
3. Any spots I should try in particular? I was going to try Eastham Bridge - Lindridge - Eardiston.

4. If I'm not fishing too badly,...

I've been looking at the rules as regards game fishing / close season fishing. The three points I'm interested in are the following:

1. It's not legal for "fish for" coarse fish on rivers between March 15th and June 15th. However, it is legal to fish for (brown) trout.
2. It's legal to ledger worms on a huge hook on rivers in the close season - because you're "fishing for" eels.
3. You need an upgraded licence if you are going...

It is important to understand that there are salmon and salmon.
The salmon that we are fishing for in the first part of the season are called springers.
They are fish that are destined to spawn this autumn. They are typically high shouldered, firm, muscular and silver fish that loose their scales easily when
handled. They are this year's fish. That have entered the river this year, or at the very latest...

Salmon provide the ultimate challenge for anyone fishing the midlands rivers. They are the largest, the hardest fighting, the most beautiful, and the most
difficult fish to catch, of any in our river systems.
If what you like to get out of your angling is a challenge, then salmon fishing provides limitless opportunities for fullfillment. If, on the other hand, you
want guaranteed catches, predictable sport, comfy and cosy fishing then forget it.

I suspect that most...

Most of the time on the Severn given the relatively warm water temps (even small things can move a bit quicker) it pays to put a bit of life into your flies
